Ashley Marc Hovelle | Collaborates with Anna Glover
Here’s an introduction of how the brands first collaboration came to life with artist Anna Glover.
One of Ashley’s favourite exhibitions spaces in London is the Design Museum, due to its ability to display a flowing story. After visiting the exhibition and with a view to Tower Bridge the ‘Jungle tank’ was presented, showcasing Anna’s beautiful artworks amidst a glass cube. Immediately being drawn to the vibrant display of fine art presented on screens and textiles, Ashley contacted Anna and asked if she would be interested in collaborating with his fashion brand. She was excited by this and explained it was something she had wanted to do with a luxury menswear brand for some time, so it was a perfect match.
On their first meeting the pair met and discussed the creative options that would fit the brands synergy and direction for the season. As Woody Harrelson’s Hawaiian shorts were part of the inspiration it made sense to use the Jungle leaf and Tropical bird as the artworks to develop. The bird is the back of a Scarlet Tanager and the leaf is inspired by old botanical paintings and Anna’s take on a banana leaf.
Anna originally hand painted these artworks with Gouache, which is a technique traditionally, used by textile designers to get a nice flat colour. The colour palette was then developed to fit with the brands energetic use against black backdrops, bringing vibrant blood orange, emerald blue and deep orchid colours to life in this collection.
The artworks were then digitally developed before they were printed using a technologically advanced form of fine digital printing which allows the prints to pop vibrantly off our garments.
These were then worked into standalone pieces and as repeat prints on t-shirts, sweatshirts and shorts for the spring summer 2016 collection.
We would like to thank Anna for her amazing contribution to this collection and her shared understanding of the design process.
